Mad About You: Love songs from movies

A good soundtrack has often been responsible for me loving a movie. When i woke up with a song from 13 on 30 stuck in my head, i had to share the song with you. It’s Belinda Carlisle singing Mad About You. It’s dreamy, happy and about that feeling we know as “falling in love”. It also did grow on me after a few listens, so maybe give it more than just one hearing.

The 13 on 30 has Madonna’s Crazy for You as well which is one of the sexiest songs i have ever heard. That and Paula Abdul’s Rush Rush, which is not really from a movie, but has Keanu Reeves in it and shot in cinematic style.

As for a sweet over song, there is nothing better than One Fine Day from One Fine Day. I loved Michelle and George in this movie and this song, well, this song is a classic.

There is also another sexy song from the movie Practical Magic called Is This Real, by Lisa Hall. you will thank me for introducing you to this gem

I heart Jim Sturgess

I fell in love today. I had read One Day but when i saw the movie, i completely fell in love with the character of Dex that i even forgot that i didn’t like Anne Hathaway at all, and ended up loving the movie. Brit actor Jim Sturgess plays Dex in such a charming way that it’s hard not to get taken in. I once had a friend who was a lot like him — dreamy, slightly effeminate, but completely male with a roving eye, with a smile on his face that sway in his walk that felt like he was always drunk. He was the kind who would make any girl feel lucky to be with him — he had that Je Ne se quois quality — you couldn’t really put your finger on it. Dex is like that — good looking, slightly sad, totally loserish, but so charming that it melts your heart, so boyish you want to do everything for him. I feel in love, thanks to Jim Sturgess and it was a lovely feeling. The soundtrack to the movie is also brilliant, esp the theme, which sound too familiar to Amit Trivedi’s score for Lootera. It can’t be a coincidence. Do hear it.

ps. I totally loved his styling too — so retro and french and brit at the same time. Lovely.

You have to watch the movie. Now.

How to know if he’s just not that into you?

I liked watching He’s Just Not That Into You, and though many things in that movie are true, many are so not. To me, there are two main points one should keep in mind.

1. Girls can’t usually play hard to get, but they usually like the guy who plays hard to get.
2. Men can usually play hard to get to the hilt, and they usually like girls who play hard to get

I use the word usually because i don’t want to generalise, but this is often the case. And also, though the movie says, “if a man likes you, he will make it a point you know”, which is often true, but there are many exceptions to the rule. One of my exes told everybody he knew that he didn’t like me “like that” but then as he couldn’t resist the fact that i liked him and did his bidding, made sure he called me every morning and said I love you, and came to my office every evening to check if i was meeting someone else!!

Attraction is complicated. How to know if somebody is flirting with you, or are you just over reacting? I find that women are “usually” the simpler sex. They can’t hide it well when they like a guy — they get emotional, they get clingy, needy and they want to love the man with all they have. They get “too much” too soon. They also never like the nice guys who like them. No sir, he instantly goes into friend zone. Remember Matt and Jenna in 13 on 30. I love that movie and i so totally love Matt — the plump neighbourhood friend who makes Jenna that dream doll house. Loving like a girl is so totally messed up. You fall for the bad boys, and just ignore the good boy, who will grow up and become such a hottie you will so regret it. You never know the good boy’s worth till he is with someone else. Ouch! Our own Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was like that, except Kajol had to start looking a “girl” before she actually gets SRK.

Girls just need to chill out and appreciate a guy who is so not their “type”. In college, there was a friend of mine who liked me, and he was so not my type. But as i spent time with him, i slowly started really liking him. The day i was going to tell him, hey, let’s just go out, he came and told me that i was a selfish, self obsessed moron who only thought of myself, and there was no way he liked me. I was too late — he thought i was using him! We never could be friends again.

And stop reading signs, though that’s just so much fun. He msgd me, he didn’t call me, he called my best friend instead, uff — if he likes you, it will happen. Just be yourself and don’t play games. It’s so much better like that. Remember Love Actually — when the guy tells Keira Knightly he loved her, even though she marries his best friend. He just wants to tell her, get closure and move on. So freaking sweet. what i don’t understand is how Keira’s character doesn’t know he likes her — he tries to make her feel like he doesn’t just a bit too hard. Guys often do that — pull the pigtails of the girl they love? But don’t pay attention to that sign because that can be misleading.

Guys, well, can just be guys. I just wished they stopped liking the girl who played hard to get and be so mean to the girl who doesn’t. She is easy, you freaks, she likes you and doesn’t understand why is that such a bad thing to admit. Hahaha. Also, i wish guys never played the friend card and then get upset when the girl doesn’t like you. My husband, whom I met when i was with the horrid ex i mentioned above, liked me from the first instant, but completely cut off when he realised i wasn’t in the space. He didn’t hang around and become a “friend”. And I totally dig that. When we restarted our conversations, he told me upfront, I like you, and this can only work if you like me. He said he wasn’t capable of playing games. And that’s when i fell in love. 🙂

I think we all just need to be honest. Tell the person you like that you like them. Either it works out, or you move on. So easy, so fun. Maybe we should leave the tears and the games for the movies, because they wouldn’t be fun without them. I have to put a video of Romi and Michelle here as they attend their high school reunion and dance the night with the school geek, who is now a millionaire. Aren’t all the girls who rejected him feeling bad now? Have a great, great, great thursday.

Today I woke up and thought of how I first got on to liking music. Like many things, this too I owe to my parents. Other than giving me only books as gifts, my mom made sure I saw the classics on film. One of my first gifts, a video tape of Sound of Music, became my first introduction to music. I sang along and knew all the songs by heart. So today, here is My favorite Things, which i sang as part of school functions too often to even count. Raindrops and roses, whiskers and kittens. 🙂 awwww such perfection. This is the version when the kids sing it as they mull over why Maria left.

And then as I totally loved Julie Andrews, there was Merry Poppins to obsess over. Just a spoonful of sugar. OMG. Lovely

and of course, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

It’s gonne be a great day 🙂

Damdaar song of the day: Tama Tama

Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dikshit absolutely kill it in this song which is one of the best choreographed songs ever! Sooo corny that it’s super good. It will raise your spirits on this Wednesday morning right away and don’t blame me if you want to make a video doing what they do right away. Let’s have a retro party instead and we can all dress a la Madhuri with in that leather dress. So freaking love it.

Exotic sucks, desi rules

I saw two videos yesterday and one totally delighted me and the other totally disgusted me.

Let’s start with the good news. Yash Raj is coming out with Shhudh Desi Romance, which is a take on modern love in small towns. I have loved Sushant Singh Rajput ever since he played Manav on Pavitra Rishta and watched that soap every day without fail just to see his face. And now he’s a freaking star that is just going to blow the competition away. And it has also has Parineeti, who does this whole normal indian girl bit to perfection. The new girl also looks pretty cute esp when she says “Tum paida hi chalu hue ya baad main infection lag gaya.” I can’t wait for this one.

Then I saw Priyanka Chopra sing Exotic and the whole mood went for a toss. WTF. The video itself, which starts with the only good thing about it — Priyanka’s ass shot in a hot bikini — is a copy of all videos ever. If you are trying to be Bollywood — which they so are because Priyanka makes everything look like an Item number (she just hasn’t got enough swag), why not shoot the video too in Bollywood style. Glam it up in a sari, or an item number type choli. Why wear high fashion and look so clueless. The lesser said about the song the better. Pitbull is running out of options it seems. Unlike In My City, this one doesn’t even have a decent hook. Why does our only musical export have to be so freaking clumsy? Anyway, you decide what you think of it. here it is.

Movie we need to watch: Frances Ha

What happens when you best friend moves out and leave you all alone in NY. You are an apprentice with a dance copmpany, but aren’t really a dancer, and you live in NYC, but don’t really have a place to call your own. What are you gonne do. Frances tells you all about it. It’s also shot in black and white — a homage to the French classics. Looks interesting, don’t you think?
